London’s restaurants offer up edible gold
Restaurants across the city have been serving up delicious London-honey based specials in a UK first as part of Capital Bee’s London Honey Festival.
A staggering half a tonne of urban honey from 18 apiaries has been made available to the Capital’s restaurants to date, The festival took place at the Royal Festival Hall on 21 August, but many of the participating restaurants - Caffe Caldesi, Dishoom, Eden Caterers, The Three Stags, Roast, Skylon, The Table Café, L'Eau a la Bouche, The Charles Lamb and Drake & Morgan - made the specials available throughout August.
Caffe Caldesi in Marylebone Lane served up oven-baked salmon with pistachio and honey crust, and The Three Stags in Lambeth is offered a special three course meal, consisting of grilled goat's cheese with roasted beets, honey dressing; honey-glazed whole chicken with fennel, chilli, red onion & bacon, olives and preserved lemons, served with buttered greens and new potatoes; and honey-poached greengages with marscapone, Amaretti biscuits.
The Refinery on Southwark St devised ‘Cowboy Fries with London honey infused sauce’, and a Skinny honey passion cocktail. Honey-based cocktails were also popular with other restaurants: Roast, in Borough Market, which already gets its honey from George Green school in Isle of Dogs, served a ‘Bare Back Rider’, made with Calvados, honey, fresh grapefruit juice, Dishoom’s Southbank Chowpatty Beach Bar on the Southbank produced a ‘Honeymoon’ cocktail, and up the road Skylon shook up the ‘Honey Trap’, made with honey vodka, rosewater, ginger liqueur, lemon juice and London honey.
