Capital Growth

The Capital Growth team

Eloise Dey
Eloise studied the Anthropology of Food Ma at SOAS where she explored the relationship between man and global food chains. Since completing her Masters she has worked in London gaining an understanding of food sustainability in urban contexts. She joined the Capital Growth team at its launch in 2008 and currently works to support and encourage spaces to sell their surplus produce to retailers. Alongside this she worked with Tristram Stuart and the Feeding 5000 team on an event that would raise awareness about the issues of food waste. Following on from the success of the Feeding 5K Eloise became one of the founding members of A Taste of Freedom where she works on colourful, delicious and informative projects to raise awareness and tackle the issues of surplus food.

Ida has been working on Capital Growth since the spring of 2009, leading on an award winning display at the RHS Hampton Court show, and providing support and advice for Capital Growth spaces.  Ida also works with Growing Communities in Hackney, managing a new microsite for them at the Castle Climbing Centre, where she is also co-ordinating a new garden project. Prior to this she ran the orchards project at Sustain from 2006, working with groups across England, and produced a publication entitled 'Protecting Our Orchard Heritage'.  Ida has also recorded radio pieces for BBC Radio 4's Food Programme, one looking at tomato passata-making in her family village in Italy, and the other hunting truffles in Tuscany.

Paola GuzmanPaola Guzman
Paola has been working on Capital Growth since October 2009, coordinating the application process, the Capital Growth East London programme and various competitions.  Previously she had volunteered for Sustain since Feb 2009. While studying Urban Design at the Bartlett School of Architecture (part of UCL) she became interested in food and its relationship to the city. In her final project she explored the idea of making London more sustainable by growing food locally.  Paola also volunteers as a Master Gardener in Islington, a programme launched by Garden Organic and volunteers at the Castle Climbing Centre's community garden in Stoke Newington.

Seb Mayfield joined Sustain in 2008 to help launch and develop the Capital Growth campaign.  Seb became a leading advocate of urban food growing after participating in a permaculture course in 2006.  Inspired by the course he co-founded the innovative Food Up Front campaign, aimed at encouraging, enabling and supporting people to grow food in their unused outdoor space. Seb also devised the One Pot Pledge campaign recently launched by Garden Organic in partnership with Food Up Front. Seb has previously acted as an adviser to applicants of the Big Lottery's Local Food programme and mentors food based social enterprises as part of the 'Making Local Food Work' programme.
