Capital Growth

Supporters & funding

Capital Growth is funded by the Big Lottery's Local Food Fund and the Greater London Authority and is managed by Sustain, which is a national not-for-profit organisation and registered charity that works with its members and others to campaign for better food and farming. Sustain is committed to retaining its independence, and is therefore funded by membership fees and by charitable and government grants. The alliance does not accept funding from commercial food companies that return profits to private shareholders, and we will not accept money from any source that would compromise, or appear to compromise, the aims and ethos of Sustain and its members. As a Sustain project, Capital Growth works to the same principles.

However, Capital Growth is a campaign to facilitate greater access to land for food growing, and more community-based food growing in and around London. We do not feel that it is our place to dictate to individual community groups where they can accept money from, nor to prevent suitable funds or other resources being made available to them should this seem beneficial to the communities involved, unless acceptance of such support might compromise the ethos and reputation of the programme as a whole, or detract from the community-based sustainable food growing ethos and intent. We keep this policy under review with the support of the campaign working party, and with advice from Sustain's trustees (one of whom is also chair of the Capital Growth working party).

The Capital Growth campaign therefore acts as a conduit for in-kind support to community-based Capital Growth projects, which may sometimes be supported by commercial and other organisations.

The financial or other support provided by these organisations is channelled via the central Capital Growth team to the Capital Growth supported projects operating at a community level. Sustain and Capital Growth itself receive no financial or in-kind support from these commercial organisations.
