London’s future good food enterprises given boost at Roots to Work conference

Capital Growth’s fourth careers themed conference welcomed over 80 people looking to find their good food job, on 18 October as part of the Gaia Foundation's We Feed the World exhibition, at Oxo Tower Wharf.

The day brought together experts and leaders in the 'good food' sector to inspire people to kick-start their own careers and develop new growing enterprises and this year was also open to London Food Link network.

One person commented “all sessions were valuable and the overall event gave me hope that we can still change the course of current trends and make our fate”.

An incredible 83 people joined us, representing over 40 ‘good food’ organisations and enterprises. Attendees heard from the expert panel followed by a Q&A and attended workshops led by experts from Growing Communities, OrganicLea, GCDA, Kings Cross Impact Hub, Edible Landscapes London, Grow Your Own Playground, Hackney Herbal, Urban Organic, Made in Hackney and WEN. They also could access one-to-one advice sessions with Social Farms & Gardens.

“The most inspiration part of the day was hearing the positivity emanating from people who work in the industry” commented another attendee.

Four courageous, aspiring entrepreneurs stepped up to pitch their ideas to the supportive audience, with the chance to win funds and books to kick-start their initiatives, all sponsored by Chelsea Green Publishing. Nicola Hearn, London Food Link supporter, won first prize with her idea for a Third Space Canteen - a social club based on people sharing an evening meal together. They source sustainable food, serve meals in a social space and share knowledge, removing the effort and confusion around choosing good food and making it easy for people to achieve a low-impact lifestyle.

“People expressing excitement about my project idea and supporting it…gave me more confidence that I could make it happen” Nicola
