New union for gardens launched in Hackney

A new Union of Hackney Gardens has been launched in the borough to help give a voice to and protect community food gardens and other green spaces.

The Union, being launched on Sunday 22 September at Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, will be open to all people involved in green spaces in the borough and will provide advice, support and sharing as well as help to protect the spaces, many of which are coming under threat from development.

It has been set up by local activitist, Kate Poland. whose previous garden, Cordwainers Grow, was closed by the landowners. The development of the latest network is also being supported by Capital Growth  who also recognise the threat to many of their network of food gardens.

Gardens can join the network online, through the Capital Growth online platform. Once registered with Capital Growth they have the option to sign up to the 6 principles of the Union of Hackney Gardens which include:

  • Protect Hackney's existing community gardens and green spaces
  • Campaign to have Hackney's community gardens designated as protects spaces.
  • Create more space for trees, plants and wildlife in Hackney.

Sarah Williams from Sustain, who run Capital Growth commented: “We are really pleased that local people are organising themselves to protect these incredibly valuable gardens. They not only give people a chance to grow their own food, but also provide access to open space, clean our air and create a haven for wildlife. We look forward to supporting more groups like this across London”.
