London’s food-lovers prepare for a fortnight of feasting

Urban Food Fortnight, 11-27 September 2015. With a month to go, London’s local food businesses, growers and producers are preparing for the annual celebration of the fantastic food being grown, produced and cooked right on our doorstep. 

During the fourth Urban Food Fortnight, which returns on Friday the 11 September, the city will be host to over 100 events and special menus using London produce.

The fortnight, run by London Food Link, highlights the hidden delights of London’s food scene and gives Londoners the chance to buy and eat ultra-local food, while celebrating the difference it makes for people involved in food growing and production in the city.

Eateries across the capital are busy creating dishes, cocktails, or entire menus to showcase the best of London’s local larder. Whether its herbs and salads from urban farms; honey harvested from community beehives; small batch beers; artisanal cheeses; or Real Bread made by social enterprises, every bite has a Londoner’s story behind it. Plus many are taking it a step further by running special events, dinners in gardens and parties in polytunnels.

Highlights include:

  • pop up dinners at Global Generation’s Kings Cross skip garden and Wildes Cheese’s ‘Night at the Dairy’, in Tottenham
  • exclusive menus at top restaurants including Hawksmoor and Mews of Mayfair
  • Capital Growth’s city wide Edible Gardens Open Day and Pop-up Pickle at the Table Café in Southwark.

The winners of the second Urban Food Awards will also be announced during the fortnight at the Urban Food Feast hosted by the Mayor of London’s Food Team at Borough Market, with categories ranging from’ London Leaves’ to ‘Best Banger’.

  1. Urban Food Fortnight is organised by London Food Link - an independent network of people, businesses and organisations that promote and campaign for good food in the city. The event has run annually since 2012 and this year is funded through Urban Food Routes and supported by The Mayor of London.  @londonfoodlink #uff15

Urban Food Routes is a unique initiative funded by the Mayor of London and Seeds of Change® helping a variety of London’s small food enterprises gain from expert business advice and funding which will also benefit their local communities. The support is co-ordinated by the Plunkett Foundation with help from London Food Link.
  3. Capital Growth is a London Food Link project, set up in 2008 to provide help to Londoners wanting to set up food growing spaces.   4. Edible Gardens Open’s Day takes place on Saturday 19 September with over 40 gardens expected to take part and open their gates to visitors across London
  5. Pop- up Pickle, 14 September, 5:30-8:30pm at The Table Restaurant, SE1 0HX with head chef and owner, Shaun Alpine-Crabtree, teaching attendees how to pickle your veg, and enterprising grower, Rosemary Jeboo, showing people how to make her famous jam. 
  6. The Urban Food Awards are the annual celebration of the best of London’s local larder. They recognise fantastic food and drink grown and made across the capital’s boroughs, and the small, community-focused producers behind them, run by London Food Link and The Mayor of London’s Food Team.
