Winter Fruit Pruning

The Castle Climbing Centre Wassail!

The Castle Climbing Centre, Green Lanes, London N4 2HA

Join our kitchen garden Wassail celebrations on Saturday 25th January. We'll pause during the usual volunteer session (11am-4pm) between 12pm-1pm for various traditional Wassail activities, inc. dunking toast into apple juice, banging pots to scare away orchard sprites (you're welcome to bring instruments too!), poem/song recital (feel free to bring your own!), and hanging cardboard blessings/intentions onto the fruit trees. Apple juice also for sale, and we'll likely have a fire.

Come and help us plant our 12 new trees on Friday 31st January! Digging, stake driving, mulching, building cages and labelling our whips as they go in at our orchard planting day on January 31st 2025, between 12pm and 2pm. Support the orchard, food forest and community garden with watering, mulching and weeding as it establishes itself, and join in our Wassail!

Practical Organic Gardening course (Level 2)

Practical Organic Gardening is a Level 2 course, designed by Sydenham Garden and accredited by the Open College Network (OCN). The 10-month course runs weekly on Thursdays, from 5th Feb – 11th Dec 2025. It is open to adult learners with some experience in gardening, who would like to develop their understanding of plants, soil and sustainable gardening techniques. Places will be prioritised for those living with a mental and/or physical health issue.

10-week Gardening Fundamentals evening course with EcoLocal

We have an exciting new gardening course at EcoLocal. Our RHS qualified and award-winning Horticultural tutor has developed a 10-week classroom-based evening course called ‘Gardening Fundamentals’ that takes you through the full range of gardening activities, from looking after and improving soil to pruning, propagation, design and keeping plants healthy. This new course will run on a Wednesday evening between 7 and 9pm for 10 consecutive weeks between 12th February and 16th April 2025.

Currants (including blackcurrants, gooseberries, redcurrants and jostaberries) may be small, but they pack a real nutrition punch. Rarely found in supermarkets, currants are easy to grow and, with the right care, can give excellent yields of fruit over many years. Their bright jewel colours add a zing to many recipes!
